Lawrence County transportation department feted

Alabama State Department of Education Transportation Director Joe Lightsey presented the Lawrence County School system a certificate this week recognizing the transportation department for a high level of performance.

The department earned the award for having a level of less than 10 percent deficiencies for its school bus inspection for the 2014 inspection year.

“These certificates are awarded annually to school systems with exemplary school bus inspections and to recognize the excellent local school system employees who work so diligently to achieve this level of performance,” Lightsey wrote. “On behalf of the Alabama State Department of Education, Pupil Transportation Section, I congratulate you for this accomplishment. Please convey our appreciation to your superintendent, shop foremen, mechanics, office staff, drivers and others for a job well done.”

Superintendent Heath Grimes said he was proud of the employees in the bus shop for their work.

“There is obviously no more important role in our school system than that of the mechanics and transportation employees whose work keeps our students safe every day as they travel,” Grimes said. “As with other departments in our district, our bus shop employees are often asked to do more work with fewer resources than other systems, but they are dedicated and work very hard to keep our buses running properly, and we appreciate what they do. We are pleased with this state recognition, and it is a credit to those employees.”
