With an increasing number of complaints about roaming pets, Franklin County Animal Control now has live traps available for residents who need them.
After several residents on Duncan Creek Road told the Franklin County Commission last week about problems with dogs from an area residence, commissioners asked Joey Wingo, Animal Control officer, to look into the matter.
“We had three landowners dealing with issues from many loose dogs at one neighbor's residence,” commissioner Chris Wallace said. “One dog had attacked a cow, and others growled and chased a resident's grandchildren. Even after it was brought to the attention of the dogs' owner, the problem continued. It's been going on for a while."
While there will be no charge for Franklin County residents to use the county's traps, a deposit of $50 will be required. Other conditions for use include agreeing to regularly monitor the trap, at least every eight hours, placing the trap where it's protected from the elements and only using the trap on the resident's property.
Traps are available at the Franklin County Animal Control office, 6421 Hwy. 524, adjacent to the Franklin County Landfill.
Wingo also presented to commissioners a new redemption policy for the recovery of dogs that have been taken into custody by animal control. To redeem a dog, a $20 pickup fee will be required, followed by an additional $10/day up to seven days.
Second offenses by the same pet owner will include a $40 redemption fee and $20/day up to seven days. Third offenses carry a $60 redemption fee and $30/day up to seven days.
After seven days, seized dogs are euthanized.
When the officer picks up a pet from the same owner four times, Wingo said he plans to contact the Franklin County District Attorney's office and request a warrant of seizure to pick up the stray animal.
