Lawrence County superintendent among Russellville finalists

Russellville City Schools officials announced late Wednesday that Heath Grimes, Superintendent of Education for Lawrence County Schools, will be interviewed as one of four finalists for the vacant superintendent position in Russellville.

Grimes will interview Monday at 10 a.m., at the RCS Central Office. Russellville High School prinicipal Dr. Tim Guinn will interview at 1 p.m., Monday.

Two other candidates, Dr. Vicky Spear and Dr. Michael McInnis, interviewed last week. McInnis, an assistant superintendent with Grenada, Miss., schools, withdrew from consideration Monday after accepting another job. Spear, principal at Vinemont Middle School, joins Grimes and Guinn as finalists for the job. RCS Superintendent Rex Mayfield announced his retirement earlier this year. Mayfield's final day will be July 31, 2015.

Guinn's interview was set for Wednesday, but was rescheduled due to health issues with RCS Board Chairman Greg Batchelor. Batchelor is expected to return for Monday's interviews.

Grimes, originally elected in 2008 by Lawrence County voters as superintendent, was reelected in 2012. His office will again be on the ballot in 2016. Grimes and his wife Amy have three young daughters. He took office in Lawrence County during proration and the system remained financially solvent during his administration.

Grimes was one of the original 13 applicants for the position, but his interview was not announced until Wednesday, one day after Lawrence County voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposed ad valorem tax that would have generated additional revenue for the system.
