RCS Board recognizes All-State choral students

For many high school students, the idea of standing before an audience is very frightening, especially if it involves singing and dancing. However, five brave Russellville students represented their school at the Alabama All-State Choral Festival this spring.

These students were Emili Crummie, Savannah Mills, Charlie Gordon, Destiny Cooper and Leah Nix. All of these students participated in All-State Chorus, and Crummie, Mills, Gordon and Nix also were involved in All-State Show Choir.

“These students were selected from 60 students,” said Joey Derr, RHS chorus teacher. “We are very proud of them.”

Derr shared at the Russellville City Schools Board Meeting last Thursday while the students were being recognized for their accomplishment that one student, Savannah Mills, has been a part of chorus and show-choir since she was eligible. Mills, who is a senior, has been in chorus for seven years and a part of show choir since she was a sophomore.

“This is what school is about,” said RCS superintendent Rex Mayfield. “We enjoy having these students show off their talents.”

With the school year almost over, summer facility use requests and work bids have already been presented to the board. These included:

Approval of the use of the RHS Auditorium on July 17-18, 2015 for the annual Franklin County Watermelon Festival Pageant sponsored by the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

Approval of the use of the RHS football stadium on May 1, 2015 for the annual “Relay for Life” event sponsored by the Franklin County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Approval of the use of the RHS baseball stadium and surrounding facilities on June 8-12, 2015 for a youth summer baseball camp sponsored by the RHS Baseball Booster Club.

Proposed E-rate Wireless bid by Howard Technology Solutions in Ellisville, Mississippi of a total award amount of $453,287.00. This contract award is contingent on funding by the Schools and Libraries E-Rate program of 80 percent. The contract will not be executed if funding is not awareded. If approved, the federal E-Rate program will fund $362,629.60, and local funds will cover the remaining 20 percent, which is $90,657.40.

Approval of Communication Plan required by the Alabama State Department of Education each year. The goal of the plan is to create a clear and precise framework for communication between the school system and community. The plan focuses on two types of audience, which are internal and external. The internal audience included students, teachers, staff, administration and school board, while the external audience is comprised of parents, businesses, civic groups, faith-based organizations and other members of the RCS community.
