Mitchell Grateful for Faculty Support

Unlike her valedictorian counterparts in the area, Courtney Mitchell from Colbert Heights High School will not be beginning college in the fall, but rather basic training for the National Guard Reserve.

However, she plans to attend the University of North Alabama after training and major in Political Science.  She also wants to attend Cumberland Law School after UNA.

“I want to be successful as possible while helping others,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell, who attends Mt. View Baptist Church, has been involved with many organizations and sports at CHHS.  She has served as President of National Honor Society, Treasurer of the Key Club and Secretary of Student Council.  She was also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the Letterman’s Club and NWSCC Talent Search.  She has played softball for three years and volleyball for four years.

“My favorite memory at CHHS was when I made the game-saving dig against Mars Hill Bible School,” said Mitchell.  “We never could beat them, but we won that game.”

For her athletic and academic achievements, Mitchell received the National Guard Alabama Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award.  She also received several scholarships for her achievements.  These include Academic, Honors Program and Leadership Scholarships from UNA, Presidential Scholarship to King’s College, Presidential Scholarship to Belhaven University and a $500 National Honor Society Scholarship.

Although she has achieved much success in high school, Mitchell feels she could not have accomplished so much without the encouragement of her teachers.

“CHHS is the best place you can go to school,” said Mitchell.  “I think you cannot go anywhere and find a staff that cares so much like they do here.  They want to see you succeed in life.”

Mitchell also found motivation in an Eleanor Roosevelt quote:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Mitchell and her fellow classmates will graduate Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m.
