New assistant shares love of reading with kids at Russellville Public Library

A love for reading is just one reason Kerri Gandy became interested in serving the community as the assistant librarian at the Russellville Public Library. Through her children, Gandy became introduced to the library and wanted to be involved with the library as more than a visitor.

“I was first introduced to the library by bringing my son to read books,” said Gandy. “He loves reading and enjoys coming to the library."

Seeing her children enjoy reading put a desire in Gandy’s heart to teach other children to enjoy reading, too.

“I love children and reading,” said Gandy. “I read to my children. That’s really my inspiration to work at the library.”

Gandy moved to Russellville from Tuscumbia when she married her husband. They have two sons, nine-year-old Grant and two-year-old Carter.

“I love working here,” said Gandy, who has been with the library since April. “I love meeting new people.  When I moved to Russellville, I didn't know anyone in town. Working at the library gives me a chance to get to know people.”

Hired to assist with the business aspect of the library, Gandy has a professional degree in office administration.

“She has been a wonderful asset to the library,” librarian Ashley Cummins said. “She went to school for business and had several years of business experience from places she worked.”

Although Gandy was very qualified to work at the library, something else about her stood out to Cummins.

“Her personality really stood out to me, and how she gets along with everyone,” Cummins said. “Plus, she really loves reading. What better place for her to work than at a library?"

Gandy’s favorite genre of books is inspirational.

“I enjoy reading books that help me become better in life,” Gandy said.

Gandy, who has already been helping with the library’s summer reading program, also looks forward to the upcoming events hosted by the library, such as the Zombie Walk in October.

“I think it will be a lot of fun,” said Gandy. “I think my nine-year-old will want to be a part of it.”

Gandy’s main focus for every day at the library and through the special events is to inspire children to love reading.

“I just hope I can teach children that reading is actually fun and that they will carry that love with them throughout their lives,” said Gandy.
