Russellville City Schools adopt plan to ease traffic issues

The first day of school is often stressful for parents and students. It is a new year, new classroom and new teacher. However, the most stressful part is the traffic.

“Superintendent Heath Grimes expressed concern about the traffic problem on the first day of school,” said West Elementary School principal Deanna Hollimon. “He asked us to create a plan to help.”

While both Russellville High School and Russellville Middle School will be starting at normal times on Thursday, August 13, West Elementary School and Russellville Elementary School will stagger the start times for each grade.

“We want parents to be able to meet the teachers and take their students to classes,” said Hollimon.

The schedule for WES is as follows:

On the first day of school, second-graders will bring their supplies and meet their teachers at 8 a.m., followed by first-graders at 10 a.m. and kindergarten boys at noon. On the second day of school (Friday, August 14), all first- and second-graders will arrive at school at 8 a.m. and spend the whole day there, while kindergarten girls will bring their supplies and meet their teacher at noon. All students will resume the normal 8 a.m. start time on Monday, August 17.

The schedule for RES is as follows:

On the first day of school, fifth-graders will bring their supplies and meet their teachers at 8 a.m., followed by fourth-graders at 10 a.m. and third-graders at noon. All students will resume the normal 8 a.m. start time on Friday, August 14.

“We will accommodate parents who have more than one child,” said Hollimon. “They will be able to bring their children at the same time. Also, the buses will be running at the normal time beginning the first day of school.”

Both WES and RES will have parent meetings, but it will be done differently this year.

WES will have a kindergarten "Back to School" meeting on Monday, August 10 at 6 p.m. for students who have these teachers: Cox, Taylor, Alford, Fleming, Swaim, Cummings and McNutt. There will be another kindergarten "Back to School" meeting on Tuesday, August 11 at 6 p.m. for students who have these teachers: Lawler, Mitchell, Lloyd, Bradford, Wright and Sykes.

“The Kindergarten Parent Night is to allow teachers enough time to go over the class rules and attendance policies,” said Hollimon. “We decided to only have a Kindergarten Parent Night, because for many of those parents this will be the first time one of their children is in school.”

RES will have a third-grade Parent Orientation on Monday, August 17 at 5:30 p.m. for parents to meet with principal Kristie Ezzell and their child’s teacher.

Parents are encouraged to contact both of the schools for more information. The telephone number for WES is (256) 331-2122, and the telephone number for RES is (256) 331-2123.
