City council approves purchase of fireworks for Fourth of July show

The annual Jam at Sloss Lake on the Fourth of July will come complete with the exciting fireworks show the thousands in attendance have grown accustomed to after the Russellville City Council approved $10,000 for the 2016 fireworks show.

At its business meeting last Monday, the council agreed to contract with Alabama Pyrotechnics once again to provide the fireworks display that highlights the annual event at Russellville's Sloss Lake. Additionally, the council agreed to appoint councilman Gary Cummings as chairman of the event.

“Gary has done a tremendous job for years with this annual event, so we're fortunate he's agreed to coordinate it once again,” Russellville mayor David Grissom said.

In other action, the council:

•Approved the purchase of a 2013 used Honda Four-Trax Rancher utility vehicle to be used by the Russellville Parks and Recreation Department to pull the drag for baseball and softball field preparation. The cost was $4,434 with a one-year warranty at $565.

•Accepted the resignation of police officer Justin Overton and declared a vacancy for patrol officer, and asked the Civil Service Board to add one additional name to the current list.

•Met in executive session to discuss a legal matter, but no action was taken during or after the session.

The council will next meet February 15 at 7 p.m., with work session at 6 p.m.
