RHS senior joins cheer squad at Alabama A&M

High expectations don’t phase Devin Jones in the least. In fact, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Jones, a Russellville High School senior, recently made the cheer squad at Alabama A&M, where she will enroll as a freshman this fall.

“It took me a lot of training to get to the collegiate level, but it paid off in the long run,” said Jones, who also lettered in varsity basketball at RHS. “It was a lot more difficult, considering the fact that they expected a lot from me.”

Jones thanked Stephanie Mayfield, her cheer coach at Russellville, along with her All-Star Cheer coaches for helping her reach the next level.

“A lot of people encouraged me to try out,” said Jones, who was recognized at a special ceremony at the RHS field house last week. “Mrs. Mayfield got me interested in cheering at the next level, and my All-Star coaches—Josh Guins, Jori Thompson and Jakora Hamilton—have been training me since the summer. They got other colleges like Martin Methodist, Austin Peay and West Alabama to invite me to try out, and I thank them for that.”

With graduation quickly approaching, Jones is eager to get started on the next phase of life. Needless to say, she has high expectations of her own.

“I’m looking for new experiences and challenges that will help me grow into being a college cheerleader and a better person,” Jones said. “I’m also excited about getting to meet my new friends and teammates as well.”
