RHS on track to hold graduation on new synthetic turf

Russellville High School officials recently began the process of replacing the turf on their football field with synthetic turf. The process has been long, but it stands to be a positive development for the school.

When beginning a process like this one, the school had to weigh its options. Such a large project would no doubt affect the day-to-day operations of the school, and the impact would be felt by various student groups from the football team to the band. In addition, the completion of the installation would run close to the date of graduation.

After considering the possible side effects of the project, the school decided that the benefits would easily be worth the minor inconveniences. As a result, the school decided to move forward with the project and have the turf replacement completed by graduation. As of now, it seems that Russellville High School will meet the deadline of May 27 for the completion of the field turf installation. The project is in full swing, and the milestones are being hit on time.

Mark Heaton, athletic director and varsity football coach at Russellville High, said on Monday the installation should be complete for graduation day.

“Right now we are expecting to hold the entire graduation on the field, unless there’s something that goes wrong and we’re not able to do that,” Heaton said. “Right now everything’s going well, and we’re hoping that happens.”

The new synthetic turf will make practicing much easier for both the football team and the band. The new turf will allow sports teams to practice in all types of weather conditions. From rain to shine, the teams can now be outside in any type of weather.

Allowing the teams at Russellville to practice at any time leads to a higher level of commitment to the athletic program. The teams being able to commit to their sport means that more opportunities open up for them. Heaton described the types of opportunities that students now have.

“In athletics, we’re committed to excellence, and it shows in everything we do with our facilities,” Heaton said. “From our perspective as athletic directors, the investments we make in our facilities and our athletic programs, we offer our kids opportunities to help them get athletic scholarships down the road.

“We have about fifteen kids this year who will be continuing their education through athletic scholarships at the collegiate level.”

With the addition of the new turf, both Russellville High School’s athletic program and its students will benefit. The first class to graduate on the new field will no doubt remember it for the rest of their lives.
