Thorn running for city council in District One

To the citzens of Russellville, District 1:

My name is John Thorn, and I am currently running for City Council District 1. My goal as city councilman is to help bring honesty, integrity and fairness to the city council. I want to reach out to my district and get their input before making decisions affecting them. My goal is NOT to promote a personal agenda, but to do what is best for the city of Russellville, and in particular District 1. Several unfair situations have come to my attention lately in regard to how things are done within the city council.

I was born in Spruce Pine near Mt. Hebron Church. We moved to Waterloo Road and Oak Street in 1940 (at which time Waterloo Road was gravel, and city water stopped about 500 feet towards downtown!)  I graduated from Rusesellville High School on Stuck Hill in 1950. I owned my first business in Russellville from 1953-1954, at which time I went into the U.S. Army and served two years.

I went to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1956, working with power line and substation construction throughout north Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and southern Kentucky. I retired from TVA on September 30, 1988. I am a 25-year cancer survivor. At this time, I am in excellent health.

While working, I attended Larimore Business School in Florence, Northwest Shoals Community, TN. I took courses in accounting, business law, sociology, math, english, history and psychology.

My parents were Charlie and Myrtle Thorn. I am married to the former Sarah Sugg Richeson. We have been married for 39 years and have four children, Debbie Herring, Charlie Thorn, Craig Richeson and Suzanne Pitt. We have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with another great-grandson due to arrive on December 1 of this year.

I own and operate Thorn Farms, raising commercial cattle. I am a member of the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association and the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. I also own and operate Thorn Excavating & Hauling, Inc. I have a business license from the city of Russellville and a license from the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board. I am a member of the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Association, and I am a member of the Alabama onsite wastewater systems.

I am an active member of the Cowboy Church of Franklin County and Russellville Lodge F&AM #371. I am an active member of the Franklin County Baptist Church Builders Mission group.
