Municipal election qualifying opens across Alabama

Qualifying for municipal elections began today, June 10th, with candidates having until Tuesday, June 24th to file their paperwork.

In 2021, the Alabama Legislature changed municipal elections to odd years in an effort to avoid conflicts with statewide and federal elections.  That gave most Alabama mayors and city council members an extra year to serve, as municipal elections were moved from 2024 to 2025. Cities including Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile, which had off-year municipal elections already, were not impacted by the legislation.

Qualifying will be for mayor and city council seats in all remaining Alabama municipalities began Tuesday. Municipal elections will be held every four years starting with 2025 on the fourth Tuesday in August.

Qualifying fees for mayor and council positions are discretionary with each municipality. The City of Russellville has no qualifying fee, while Phil Campbell charges $25 for council candidates and $50 for candidates running for mayor.

Qualifying ends June 24, 2025, at 5 p.m.
