Belgreen boys fall to Baldwyn (MS) in final game at Bracy

TUSCUMBIA - A mistake-filled third quarter proved too much for Belgreen to overcome on Thursday as the Bulldogs dropped their second game in three days at the Bracy Invitational at Deshler High School, falling 58-46 to Baldwyn (MS).

Belgreen (10-5) trailed by just eight points at the break, but Baldwyn’s superior quickness and athleticism started to take its toll in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 5-for-6 from the field in the third quarter but committed 10 turnovers, many of which the Bearcats converted into easy points at the other end on their way to out-scoring Belgreen 21-12 and opening up a 47-30 lead.

Baldwyn shot 8-for-14 from the field in the third quarter and stretched the lead to as many as 23 points in the fourth before the Bulldogs closed the game on an 11-0 run.

Felix Hayes, a 6’3 senior, led the Bearcats with 23 points. He went 7-for-8 at the foul line and also hit 7-of-13 shots from the field, including a pair of threes and two alley-oop dunks.

After Belgreen pulled to within three at 19-16 late in the first half on a deep three by Brant Bragwell, Hayes responded with a trey of his own and then flushed a two-handed jam off a baseline lob to push the lead to eight. Hayes dunked again on another lob early in the third and finished the quarter with nine points, going 5-for-6 at the foul line.

Bragwell, a sophomore guard, made three threes on the day for the Bulldogs and finished with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting. Junior guard Jacob Mayberry also scored 11 points, going 5-for-6 from the foul line and adding six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Mason Bragwell finished with 10 points and four boards.

Belgreen out-shot Baldwyn 44 percent (17-for-39) to 40 percent (22-for-55) and also went 8-for-10 at the line, but the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome 24 turnovers.

Michael Crump, a 6’3 junior, added 12 points for the Bearcats.

Belgreen will open 2017 next Tuesday night at Shoals Christian before facing county rival Tharptown in a big area game next Friday. The Bulldogs sit atop the Class 1A, Area 13 standings at 3-0, one game ahead of the Wildcats (2-1).
