Dempsey's career night helps Belgreen beat Vina for fourth straight win

Emma Dempsey scored a career-high 26 points for Belgreen on Tuesday night, and the Lady Bulldogs used a big fourth quarter to rally past Vina for a 62-52 win, their fourth in a row.

Dempsey, an eighth-grade post player, scored all 11 of Belgreen’s points in the first quarter, went 5-for-6 at the line in the second quarter and then added 10 more points in the second half. She finished the night 16-for-25 from the foul line.

Junior point guard Abby Hester scored a season-high 33 points for Vina, which led 44-43 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs (10-8, 3-2 in Class 1A, Area 13) then closed the game on a 19-8 run, avenging a previous loss to Vina and remaining in the hunt to host next month’s area tournament.

Jasmine Martin finished with 12 points for Belgreen, eight of which came in the second half. She hit a pair of threes and went 4-for-4 from the foul line. Cammie Terrell and Katie Dempsey each added eight points, Brianna Wood scored six and Shellie Barber had two. The Lady Bulldogs were 26-for-43 from the line as a team.

Hester finished the night 17-for-23 from the foul line. She knocked down a pair of threes and scored 11 points in the third quarter, but Belgreen still managed to cut a three-point halftime deficit down to one before taking control in the fourth.

Kaitlyn King added seven points for Vina, which shot 19-for-31 from the line. Sarah Johnson, Emma Humphries and Gracie Raper finished with four points apiece.

Both teams will return to action on Friday, with Belgreen visiting county rival Phil Campbell and Vina hosting Tharptown in an area game.
