Belgreen softball blanks Tharptown, Phil Campbell on consecutive days

The Belgreen High School varsity softball team recorded two shutout victories over Franklin County rivals Tharptown and Phil Campbell on Monday and Tuesday, improving the Lady Bulldogs’ record to 27-13 this campaign.

On Monday, Belgreen, ranked No. 7 in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll of Class 2A, traveled to Tharptown (13-13) and blanked the Lady Wildcats 12-0. The following day, BHS hosted Class 3A Phil Campbell (12-20) and secured a 15-0 victory over the Lady Bobcats.

Zoey Blaxton got the start in the circle for Belgreen against THS. She pitched all five shutout innings in the run rule-shortened game, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters.

Belgreen jumped up 2-0 in the top of the first, extended its lead with a one-run third, and then blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning to make it 8-0.

A couple of walks led to an RBI double by Mackinley Hogan to get the scoring started in the fourth. It was followed by an RBI walk drawn by Jemma Moore, a two-RBI single by Kendra Williams, and an RBI single by Shaylyn Bryant.

The Lady Bulldogs added four more runs in the fifth to give them their final 12-0 advantage. Three of the four runs came off the bat of Ellie Pounders, whose line drive double into center field scored Hogan, Marleigh Terry, and Randi Terry. The final run of the game came via a M Fretwell sacrifice fly.

Tharptown’s Alyssa Fischer, credited with the loss, got the start for the Lady Wildcats and tossed three and a third innings before being relieved by Lexi Little and Sophie Waldrep.

In Tuesday’s three-inning contest vs. Phil Campbell, the Lady Bulldogs used a 10-run second inning to propel them past the visiting Lady Bobcats.

Belgreen outhit PCHS 11-2 and was led by the shortstop Williams, who went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

BHS opened the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the second, the hosts saw their first eight batters reach before Phil Campbell recorded an out. And then in the third, Belgreen iced the game with two more runs, one coming through an error and the other on an RBI single by Madison Fretwell that scored Randi Terry.

Blaxton got the pitching start again in the Phil Campbell game, tossed all three innings, and recorded three strikeouts and the win.

Addi James, the starting pitcher for Phil Campbell, was stuck with the loss. She tossed one inning before being relieved by Shiloh Madden.
