My Take on This: Don't miss out on family fun in Spruce Pine

This past Friday night I attended a fun event at the Spruce Pine Community Center. It was publicized in the local newspapers, including the fantastic Franklin Free Press.

The attendance was low, and there’s no way of telling you what you missed. Even I was in for two hours of continued games. There was not a boring minute. The only time a game was delayed was the 10 or 15 minutes we took for a food break. I’m usually a big eater, but I’ve gotta tell you, I couldn’t wait to play those games.

They’d play two games back-to-back for ages 12 and under, then two games back-to-back for the older people up to 62 who were young at heart and fun to be around.

These two hours taught me that time really does fly when you’re having fun. Watching the young ones play was equally exciting for the “older kids.”

The prizes for the winners were great, and the runners-up all got a consolation prize—their choice between candy bars, gum and all that good junk. No one walked away empty-handed.

Door prizes were drawn often during the two hours, and that included delicious homemade cakes and cookies, plus a variety of useful items for a male and a female. There was something for everyone.

It was so much fun to watch the adults play silly games and those well-thought-out games based on The Price is Right. The laughter and the laid-back atmosphere helped create a memorable family night that was a relief from the politics going on. Don’t get me wrong—that is an important part of life, but even the politicians’ families deserve a fun night with their loved ones.

Everyone walked away with the biggest smiles, lots of memories and the beginning of new friendships. It’d be so worth your time to bring your kids and a can of food. You’re not obligated to bring a can of food, but we all did.

The wonderful folks from Spruce Pine Methodist Church are the ones who take their time and effort for everyone in this area to spend family time together. They do all the work. All that’s asked of everyone else is to show up and have fun.

They are hoping they can have their second event during May, so keep your eyes open for a family night of fun and games.

I must tell you, if you don’t like to enjoy life and just have fun, then this is not the place for you. If you don’t enjoy spending time with your kids and spouses or friends you hang out with, then this is definitely not for you. But for the ones who are all about fun, god and games, there’s no better place to be!

I’ll certainly be there next time, and I hope to see you there!
