Honey Do List: Fly your flag

Memorial Day (May 30, 2016), Flag Day (June 14, 2016), Independence Day (July 4, 2016). These are just a few of the 19-plus special days of the year when the flag of the United States of America should be flown. Of course, the flag may be flown on any and every day of the year, but proper respect should be shown in how the flag is used and displayed.

United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1 — The Flag

"No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America." Section 8

"The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing." Section 8j

The entire flag code can be found at http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm. (An interesting addendum can be found by clicking on the "under God" reference on item #4.)

This is a timely matter, to call attention to proper use of the American Flag, and I think you will find a quick read of the Flag Code to be interesting.

Some points that caught my attention:

The flag should never be worn as apparel, bedding or drapery. Flag patches are appropriate on uniforms of service such as firemen, policemen and military personnel. Flag lapel pins should be worn on the left lapel over the heart.

The flag should never be used in advertising.

The flag may be flown 24 hours a day but should be properly illuminated and visible at night.

There is so much interesting information on this website that I don't have room for here. For private citizens, this is a guide and there is no official law enforcement. Just remember to be respectful to our American Flag and all it stands for.

Have a great summer, and enjoy your American freedom.
