Arts and Humanities Council received $30,000 grant for Roxy Theatre

The Alabama State Council on the Arts recently awarded over $2.5 million in Creative Places Arts Facilities Grants to 64 nonprofit organizations. The Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council was one of the nonprofit organizations to receive a $30,000 Enhancement Grant for the Historic Roxy Theatre.

This program assists arts organizations in building, renovating, restoring, or enhancing facilities used for arts activities that benefit Alabamians.

Elliot Knight, Director of the Alabama State Council on the Arts stated, “We are very proud of the Creative Places Arts Facilities Grant Program because it strengthens Alabama’s creative economy – as you use the granted funds to pay for contractors, purchase equipment from local vendors, and improve the spaces and venues available to experience the arts, your community is strengthened, and the quality of place improved. The investment in cultural infrastructure will pay dividends for years to come, for Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council, and all of Alabama.”

Appropriation from the Alabama State Legislature made this grant possible. The Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council is very grateful to Representative Jamie Kiel and Senator Larry Stutts for their continued support in supporting the arts in our community.

The Arts Council Board of Directors has approved a budget, set timelines, and conversed with contractors. Work will begin on the interior of the Historic Roxy immediately. The first phase is to update sound and technology equipment. The system we have used over the years is not conducive to the needs of professional bands or production shows. Many times we have rented sound equipment from the Shoals to meet our needs which is an extra expense to the Arts Council.

Inside the Roxy cosmetic work such as paint lobby; auditorium; balcony; and restroom on main floor will be made. The auditorium has not been painted since 1987 when the Roxy Theatre was donated to the Arts Council.

Arts and creativity are an economic engine that create jobs in multiple industries, drive tourism, and provide opportunities for young people.

Other non-profit organizations that received Creative Places Arts Facilities Grants in our area are: Shoals Theatre Florence Construction Grant-$43,000; Tennessee Valley Art Association Tuscumbia Enhancement Grant-$25,900; Project Threadways Florence Construction Grant-$80,000.

Creative Places funding is available in three distinct categories:Enhancement grants to fund equipment purchases and upgrades that will improve how cultural assets and works of art are presented, produced, exhibited, and/or preserved;Design grants to fund necessary steps to build, renovate, reuse, or restore an arts facility; and Construction grants to fund the building of a new facility, substantial renovations of an existing facility, or significant repairs/modifications of existing facilities.
