Vina scored in every inning against Tremont on Thursday afternoon, rolling to a 17-0 rout for its first win of the season.
Abby Hester led off the top of the first with a single and stole her 15th base of the season before scoring on a double by fellow senior Brooke Brown to make it 1-0. The Lady Red Devils (1-2) added another run in the second when Hailey Cantrell walked, moved to third on a single by Hester and came home on a bunt by Brown.
Vina scored four runs in the top of the third, getting singles from Sarah Johnson and Kaley Vandiver and walks by Greta Raper, Hester and Brown. Sophomore Kaitlyn King delivered the key hit in the inning with a two-run single to center as the Lady Red Devils stretched their lead to 6-0.
Johnson and Hester walked in the top of the fourth, and Cantrell was hit by a pitch. Raper and Brown both singled, and Vandiver put down a sacrifice as Vina added two more runs to make it 8-0.
The Lady Red Devils finished off the win with nine runs in the fifth. King, Kayla Thompson and Baylee Hutcheson were all hit by a pitch, and Hester, Johnson, Cantrell and Kaitlyn Athey all walked. Seventh-grader Kassidie Gesler came through with a two-run single, and Johnson added a two-run double as Vina extended the lead to 17-0.
King earned the win in the circle, striking out ten batters in five shutout innings.
Heading into Monday’s game at Covenant Christian, Hester has now reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances and already has 17 stolen bases this season. Brown has reached base in nine of her last 10 plate appearances.
