PCHS softball team honors three seniors as Lady Bobcats dispatch Cherokee 8-2

The Phil Campbell High School varsity softball team (12-14) picked up a victory over Cherokee on Senior Night Tuesday night. All three PCHS seniors—Mia Ambrosio, Siddalee Rogers, and Kadence Taylor—batted 1-2-3 in the Lady Bobcats’ lineup and contributed at the plate in the 8-2 win over the Lady Indians.

Ambrosio, Rogers, and Taylor were honored by their teammates and coaching staff during the Senior Night ceremony. Phil Campbell head coach Jason Lindsey said the trio of seniors have all shown dedication, competitiveness, and selfless leadership during their softball careers at PCHS.

“All three seniors have been with me for my two years as coach and have played five to six years each in the program. That shows a love for the game that is needed to build and sustain a winning, competitive program,” Lindsey said. “When I took over, they had only won two games the previous year so it would’ve been easy to quit. They’ve persevered and led by example. They each lead in a way that fits their personality and our team’s personality.

“They are positive influences on our young team, they encourage, and they have shown how to handle tough situations with respect,” he added. “We’ve moved them around the field and lineup for team reasons, and instead of causing dissension, they’ve led and accepted what we have asked of them. They’re very selfless individuals.

“These girls will be very successful in the future because of their ability to lead, their work ethic, and their commitment to excellence. I’ve been very honored to coach them and blessed to watch them grow. They know they always have a home here.”

Phil Campbell jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the visitors pushed two runs across in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a final 8-2.

The Lady Bobcats scored two runs in each of the first two innings to get the game started. Ambrosio and Rogers accounted for the first two runs of the game in the bottom half of the first. An RBI double by Rogers scored Ambrosio, who drew a leadoff walk; Rogers later came around to score thanks to a Cherokee error.

In the second inning, an RBI double by Addi James scored Madison Baker and then a Cherokee error in the next at-bat scored Kylee Fugate.

The two-run second inning was followed by solo PCHS runs in the third and fourth innings. Ambrosio smacked an RBI single into center field in the third, and Rogers came around to make it 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI groundout by Chaley Bullington.

Phil Campbell’s final two runs were scored in the fifth inning. Ambrosio, who finished the game with three RBIs, earned two RBIs with a ground ball that scored Fugate and Baker to make it 8-0.

James was the pitcher of record for the Lady Bobcats, tossing a complete game. James allowed two earned runs off three hits and finished with three strikeouts.

Phil Campbell is scheduled to face Colbert Heights in its next contest on Thursday, April 17.
