NWSCC selected as 2026-27 Alabama Work-Based Learning Best Practice

Northwest Shoals Community College (NWSCC) has been selected as a 2026-27 Regional Work-Based Learning (WBL) Best Practice and a contender for the Alabama Seal of Excellence in Work-Based Learning for its annual community workforce partnership, Manufacturing Day.

Manufacturing Day at NWSCC is an annual community event that introduces prospective students to the exciting opportunities available through Career and Technical Education (CTE). Since its launch in 2021, Manufacturing Day has welcomed more than 1,500 students and partnered with over 40 industry leaders, creating meaningful connections between education and the region’s workforce.

"Being recognized as an Alabama Work-Based Learning Best Practice is a true honor and a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff and community partners," said NWSCC President Jeff Goodwin. "This recognition highlights our commitment to providing students with real-world experience and hands-on opportunities that lead directly to high-demand workforce careers across our region."

The event provides students with the opportunity to explore high-demand career pathways in advanced manufacturing and related technical fields while learning about the education, skills and training needed for success. Through interactive exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, campus tours and conversations with faculty, current students and employers, attendees gain firsthand insight into today's modern manufacturing environment.

Manufacturing Day also serves as a bridge between education and industry by connecting students with local employers, apprenticeship opportunities, internships, and career pathways that lead to rewarding, high-wage careers. Participants discover how NWSCC’s Career and Technical Education programs prepare graduates with industry-recognized credentials and the skills employers value most.

"By directly aligning our CTE programs with industry needs, Manufacturing Day provides students with a clear roadmap from classroom learning to high-wage, credentialed careers," said NWSCC Dean of Workforce Leslie Tomlinson.

As a Regional WBL Best Practice, NWSCC will present the Manufacturing Day initiative at the North Alabama WBL convening on October 20 at Calhoun Community College.

Following regional presentations in November, four recipients will be selected for the Alabama WBL Seal of Excellence, recognizing exemplary work-based learning practices across the state.
