Contract awarded on Red Bay lighting project from Bear Creek Bridge to Water Plant intersection

(This is a news release from the desk of Red Bay Mayor Mike Shewbart released May 12, 2026)

The Alabama Department of Transportation has awarded the bid for the construction of the lights from the Bear Creek Bridge to the 9thStreet West (Water Plant) intersection. The construction is scheduled to start May 18, 2026 or soon after. The funds to do the project were secured by Congressman Robert Aderholt. This was a project that was needed to bring lighting to the City of Red Bay and to help bring a safe intersection to the city. This should also help with crime in the city. It has been said that crime is higher in areas that are dark and hidden at night. We want to thank Congressman Aderholt for his leadership in Washington D.C. for bringing our tax dollars back to our city.

The contract was awarded to Big River Electric, Inc Killen Al., the low bidder for project. Bids were $709,151.00 to $796,028.00 collecting bids from 3 different construction companies.

When construction begins, please use caution in work zones. Additional police patrols will be in the area. A completion date has not been set, but the project could take up to six months. This work will replace the lights the city installed several years ago at the Highway 24 and Highway 19 intersection. We hope to reuse the removed lights on 11th St. SE entering Red Bay to help welcome visitors and provide a well-lit, safe area for our citizens.
