Northwest Shoals Community College (NWSCC) recently reached a significant milestone in its mission to guide local students toward successful careers, hosting the first Career Exploration Boot Camp on the Shoals Campus.
The event, organized through the Success Coach Initiative’s “College Bound Program,” focused on inspiring and guiding students from Franklin County toward postsecondary education and meaningful future careers.
Funded through the Alabama Community College System’s Workforce Development Division, the Success Coach Initiative is a statewide effort designed to support underserved students. By providing targeted college and career planning, the program assists students who may have limited or unclear career goals, helping them transition into and thrive within the community college system.
“At its core, this initiative is about connection,” said NWSCC Assistant Dean of Dual Enrollment Casey Eggleston. “Through partnerships with local schools and workforce leaders, we are working directly with students to build confidence and create achievable pathways to success.”
The boot camp offered participants a comprehensive look at the region’s industrial and educational landscapes. The day’s activities included:
Industry Integration: Students began the day with a site visit to G & G Steel to learn about large-scale manufacturing.
Professional Skills: Sessions led by industry representatives and NWSCC staff on the Shoals Campus emphasized the importance of work ethic and professional "soft skills."
Career Assessments: NWSCC Assistant Dean of Dual Enrollment Casey Eggleston and NWSCC Success Coach Denese Gault guided students through the Success Coach Connect Curriculum, utilizing career assessments to align student interests with future possibilities.
Healthcare Exploration: Shea Thomas, NWSCC Director of Nursing Education and the Phil Campbell Campus led a session on healthcare pathways, which included a tour of the college’s new mobile medical simulation lab.
The program currently serves 103 students across five Franklin County schools: Phil Campbell, Vina, Belgreen, Tharptown, and Red Bay. The boot camp was designed to increase awareness of career and technical education (CTE) programs while demonstrating that higher education is an attainable goal.
The day concluded with a tour of the Shoals Campus and a social outing, where students attended a Patriots softball game against Snead State.
