Red Bay tennis teams compete in Class 1A-3A Section 6 meet

On Monday, April 13, varsity teams across the state of Alabama competed in section tournaments, including the Red Bay High School girls’ and boys’ teams, which participated in the Class 1A-3A Section 6 meet.

Class 1A-3A Section 6 includes Covenant Christian, Lexington, Mars Hill, Red Bay, Shoals Christian, and Winston County. The section champion and section runner-up advance to the AHSAA state tournament.

On the girls’ side of singles play, Red Bay had one student-athlete advance past the first round to the semifinals, McKenna McKelroy, who beat Rogers’ Sophia Lopour 6-4, 6-4. McKelroy ultimately fell to Shoals Christian’s Gentry Bilyeau in the second flight semis 6-0, 6-0.

Red Bay results from the other girls’ singles flights include:

  • Flight 1: Covenant Christian’s Lauren Thompson def. Red Bay’s Clara Nunley 6-0, 6-1

  • Flight 3: Lexington’s Summer Young def. Red Bay’s McKenna Wooten 6-4, 6-5

  • Flight 4: Rogers’ Bree Boyd def. Red Bay’s Gadzden Bohannon 6-0, 6-3

  • Flight 5: Rogers’ Anna Claire Chamblin def. Red Bay’s Hollie Sharp 6-0, 6-3

  • Flight 6: Covenant Christian’s Lucy Avery def. Red Bay’s Marliz Martinez 6-0, 6-0

Boys’ singles play at the section meet saw RBHS competitors all fall in the semifinals:

  • Flight 1: Covenant Christian’s Gray McCoy def. Red Bay’s Talon Johnston 6-0, 6-0

  • Flight 2: Shoals Christian’s Andrew Jackie def. Red Bay’s Preston Henson 6-0, 6-2

  • Flight 3: Shoals Christian’s Ace Bain def. Red Bay’s Chap Hardin 6-4, 6-2

  • Flight 4: Covenant Christian’s Ethan Colagross def. Red Bay’s Taygen Peoples 6-0, 6-1

  • Flight 5: Shoals Christian’s Mason Soria def. Red Bay’s Humphries 6-1, 6-0

  • Flight 6: Covenant Christian’s Warren Jackson Hubbard def. Red Bay’s Rowan Jennings 6-1, 6-1

In girls’ doubles play, Red Bay teams Clara Nunley and McKenna McKelroy, McKenna Wooten and Gadzden Bohannon, and Hollie Sharp and Marliz Martinez were all eliminated in the first round. Nunley and McKelroy lost to Covenant Christian’s Lauren Thompson and Anna Collins Karr 6-1, 6-2; Wooten and Bohannon fell to Rogers’ Catalina Tamola and Bree Boyd 6-0, 6-3; and Sharp and Martinez dropped their match to Rogers’ Anna Claire Chamblin and Ericka Price 6-0, 6-1.

In boys’ doubles action, Red Bay’s Talon Johnston and Preston Henson were dropped in the first round by Covenant Christian’s Gray McCoy and Carson Spain 6-1, 6-0. The Tiger teams of Chap Hardin and Taygen Peoples and Humphries and Rowan Jennings both lost to duos from Shoals Christian 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.

In the final team standings, Red Bay’s girls finished in sixth place with two points; the RBHS boys finished tied for fourth with no points.
