Belgreen, Phil Campbell, Russellville, and Tharptown athletes race at AHSAA Cross Country State Championships

The 2025 AHSAA Cross Country State Championships were held at Oakville Indian Mounds Park on Saturday, November 8, and there were plenty of local student-athletes taking part in the Class 1A-2A, 3A, and 5A meets.

In the Class 1A-2A race, Belgreen High School and Tharptown Tharptown High School had 14 runners between them with THS’ boys competing as a team.

Belgreen senior Briseyda Luna was the top finisher from her school, placing 21st with a time of 22:07.6 in the girls’ 5k race. Luna’s teammate Elizabeth Motes finished 68th with a time of 24:28.81.

Miguel Perez and Jose Gabriel Estrada ran for the BHS boys. Perez and Estrada finished 57th and 58th, respectively, in the 5k with times of 19:31.53 and 19:32.61.

Tharptown had one athlete racing in the girls’ 5k. That was Sophie Waldrep, who finished 45th with a time of 23:21.37. That set a new personal best time for her.

The Tharptown boys’ team, which placed 12th out of 16 teams, were led by Emmanuel Campos who came in 21st at 18:25.9. The Wildcats had three others—Daniel Jimenez, Edgar Perez, and Melvin Gutierrez—finish in the top 100.

Phil Campbell High School freshman Rayna Scott was the lone runner from Franklin County to race in the Class 3A championship meet. Scott finished her 5k in 24:49.0, good enough to place 61st.

Rounding out the list of local competitors are a trio of sophomore runners from Russellville High School.

Pascual Felipe had the best performance of the three. He placed 29th in the Class 5A boys’ 5k race with a time of 17:24.02. Felipe was followed by Jonathon Manzo who finished 92nd by completing his 5k in 19:14.63.

Heidy Jacobo, who ran in the 5A girls’ 5k, came in 43rd place with a time of 21:59.29.
