Five local cross country teams compete at Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville

Five local cross country teams competed at the 2025 Jesse Owens Classic, held at Oakville Indian Mounds Park, on October 4.

Scores of teams from all classifications met in Oakville for the meet. Belgreen, Phil Campbell, Russellville, Tharptown, and Vina were among them.

Belgreen had eight competitors—four girls and four boys—compete in the “Green” 5k race. Briseyda Luna finished top among her teammates, coming in 25th place overall with a time of 22:50.92; Elizabeth Motes (66th), Lilibeth Cruz (158th), and Lidseidy Donagustin (169th) came in after her.

The Belgreen boys’ team’s best finish came from Jose Gabriel Estrada who ended his race in 96th place with a time of 20:24.79. Miguel Perez (150th), Aaron Rubido (210th), and Skylar Hardy (220th) also competed in the boys’ “Green” 5k.

Phil Campbell had a couple girls and boys competitors. Avery Wells finished 52nd overall in the girls’ “Green” 5k with a time of 24:18.35, while Rayna Scott came in 114th at 27:54.05.

Bailey Nix (193rd) and Uriah Fisher (239th) competed in the “Green” 5k for the Bobcats’ boys’ team.

The Russellville Golden Tigers had over 40 runners between their boys’ and girls’ teams. On the girls’ side, in the “Bronze” 5k, Heidy Jacobo was Russellville’s best finisher. Jacobo came in 40th overall with a time of 21:48.88.

On the boys’ side, Pascual Felipe completed the 5k in 17:45.62, good enough for 31st place.

Tharptown High School had two girls and five boys run in the respective “Green” 5k races. Sophia Waldrep and Isabella Hall came in 69th and 111th, respectively, for the Tharptown girls. Meanwhile, Daniel Jimenez (102nd), Melvin Gutierrez (126th), Giancarlos Espinoza (174th), Abel Gomez (223rd), and Javin Brewer (238th) participated for the THS boys.

Vina High School, who had six race in the girls’ 2.1 mile run, had just one compete in the girls’ “Green” 5k race: Samantha Elders came in 145th overall with a time of 30:48.1.

In the 2.1 mile race, Lindie Easterling placed 150th with a time of 16:54.6; Maralynn Peterson, Kylie Cochran, Kinsley Newton, Cecilia Rowbottom, and Nolee Powell also ran in the event.
