Russellville blanks Decatur 42-0 to improve to 5-1 in region play

The Russellville High School varsity football team went on the road for the final time in the regular season Friday night and routed region rival Decatur High School 42-0 to improve 8-1 and 5-1 in Class 5A Region 7 action. Five different Golden Tigers scored the team’s six touchdowns and the RHS defense forced four turnovers in the program’s first pitched shutout since 2023.

The contest began with a 10-minute stalemate, but the Russellville offense was able to break through late in the first quarter to score the game’s first points. Senior running back Tarus Davis ran around the left side for an eight-yard score, his 22nd rushing touchdown of the season, to put the visitors up 7-0.

Davis finished the night with 16 carries for 105 yards, pushing him over the 1,500-yard mark for the season. It was also his 10th straight 100-plus-yard rushing game, dating back to last year.

Russellville’s next two scores came in the second quarter. The first of those came when senior running back Eli Harris, with 4:44 left on the clock, took the handoff from senior quarterback Tripp Cleveland and ran, untouched, right up the middle for 39 yards and his third rushing touchdown of the season. Cleveland followed up a few minutes later with a quarterback sneak from less than a yard out to put the Golden Tigers up 21-0 at the break.

A special teams disaster for the Red Raiders gave the Golden Tigers a 28-0 advantage early in the third quarter. After the Russellville defense forced a three-and-out to start the second half, Decatur’s punter fumbled the snap and lost the ball; it was recovered near the goal line by freshman Braylen Willis, who just had to fall forward a yard to record his first career touchdown.

Harris’ second rushing touchdown of the night, a near mirror image of his first, put RHS up 35-0 a little later in the third quarter. The senior back took the handoff up the middle, again, and went through the heart of the defense untouched, again, this time from 23 yards out.

Russellville, playing its reserves for much of the fourth quarter, capped the scoring in the dying seconds of the game with a 32-yard touchdown rush by freshman Kannon Ergle, his first career touchdown at the varsity level.

In defeat, Decatur, led by former Russellville head coach John Ritter, dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in Region 7. Friday’s game marked the first time since 1981 the Golden Tigers faced (and defeated) an opponent led by a former RHS head coach.

For Russellville, its win over DHS sets it up for a consequential Homecoming and regular season finale against Austin High School. A defeat to Austin would send RHS, which has already clinched a playoff spot, on the road for the first round of the playoffs; a win over the Black Bears, however, would seal, at the very least, second place in the region and give Russellville first-round hosting rights for the seventh straight year. A region title is also not out of the question: If Russellville wins and Florence falters at home to Hartselle, the Golden Tigers would clinch their first region championship since 2023.

Russellville and Austin are set to kickoff at Golden Tiger Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 23.
