Russellville, Vina outdoor track & field teams perform well at Deshler meet

The Russellville High School and Vina High School varsity outdoor track and field teams competed at a Deshler High School-hosted meet over the weekend. The Golden Tigers earned top team finishes claiming first in the boys standings with 153 points and second in the girls standings with 98 points. Vina’s girls finished fifth out of seven teams in the standings with 67 points.

In the field events, Russellville had many top three finishes including one first place finish.

Junior Keira Cruse claimed RHS’ lone first place finish in a field event in the girls’ long jump with a mark of 16-5.5 on her first attempt. Cruse would also add a fourth place mark in the girls’ triple jump.

Other notable performances in field events were sophomore Charley Johnson’s silver finish in the girls’ shot put (32-0.5), sophomore Lillianna Hood’s third place finish in the girls’ discus throw (73-10) and her second place finish in the girls’ javelin event (71-0), and sophomore Angeleah Smith’s third place in the girls’ long jump (15-0.5). Sophomore Sir Williams’ recorded a third place mark in the boys’ long jump (17-4.5) while senior Gavin McDaniel and junior Jasen Noel claimed second and third, respectively, in the boys’ triple jump with marks of 40-5.5 and 37-1. And in the boys’ javelin, senior Elijah Dunstan grabbed second place with a mark of 128-3.

Vina’s lone gold performance of the meet came in a field event, the girls’ javelin throw. Eighth-grader Cecilia Rowbottom claimed the top spot in javelin with a mark of 74-3. Rowbottom would also go on to get second place in the triple jump final.

VHS freshman Bella Creekmore found herself on the podium, too, with a third-place finish in the javelin event after her throw measured at 51-8.

In track events, the Golden Tigers had 13 podium-worthy performances, including six first place finishes.

Sophomore Darron Jones had two first-place finishes in the boys’ 100- and 200- meter dashes. In the 100-meter dash, Jones finished in 10.98 seconds; he completed the 200-meter in 22.67 seconds.

Senior Hannah Waldrep and junior Julyun Francisco had Russellville’s other two individual top finishes. Waldrep claimed gold in the girls’ 400-meter dash, completing the race in 1:06.68. In the same event on the boys’ side, Francisco claimed first place with a time of 53.91.

The Golden Tigers also grabbed first place in two relay events. RHS’ boys took gold in the 4×100 meter race and the 4×800 meter race with times of 43.13 and 9:55.15. In the other relays, Russellville’s girls finished second and third in the 4×100 and 4×400 and Russellville’s boys finished second in the 4×400 relay.

Other noteworthy track performances from the Golden Tigers include senior Connor Devaney’s silver in the boys’ 200-meter dash, junior Jamarkus Mitchell’s second place finish in the boys’ 400-meter dash, and sophomore Pascual Felipe and freshman Anthony Bautista’s second- and third-place times in the boys’ 1600-meter run.

Vina eighth-grader Lindie Easterling had the Red Devils’ best individual track finish, taking third place in the girls’ 1600-meter run with a time of 6:45.30.

VHS’ girls also added a third-place finish in the 4×100 meter relay.
