County cross country teams race at 15th Annual Pepsi XC Challenge
Five local varsity cross country teams—Belgreen, Phil Campbell, Russellville, Tharptown, and Vina—competed at the 15th Annual Pepsi XC Challenge, hosted by Lawrence County High School, in Moulton on Saturday. You can view the full results HERE.
Belgreen had eight total runners between the girls’ and boys’ Class 1A-4A 5k run. BHS senior Briseyda Luna was the girls’ team’s top finisher, coming in 11th place with a time of 23:23.92. The Lady Bulldogs’ other three competitors were seventh-grader Elizabeth Motes (44th; 26:15.08), senior Lilibeth Cruz (115th; 32:24.89), and junior Elana Hardy (161st; 40:48.38).
Belgreen’s boys’ team had six runners. Senior Miguel Perez, who finished 53rd with a time of 21:12.06, was the Bulldogs’ top finisher. He was followed closely by fellow senior Jose Gabriel Estrada, who finished 55th with a mark of 21:17.56. Belgreen’s other two 5k racers were senior Aaron Rubido (128th; 24:34.06) and eighth-grader Skylar Hardy (144th; 25:46.36).
Phil Campbell had three total competitors in the Class 1A-4A 5k races—two girls and one boy. In the girls’ 5k, eighth-grader Avery Wells claimed 29th place with a time of 25:22.65 while freshman Rayna Scott finished 71st with a time of 28:16.62.
The Bobcats’ lone boys’ 5k runner was junior Bailey Nix, who came in 142nd at 25:29.36.
Russellville had 33 total competitors in the girls’ and boys’ Class 5A-7A 5k races. The top girls’ finisher was sophomore Heidy Jacobo, who finished 30th with a mark of 22:46.15. The top boys’ 5k finisher for the Golden Tigers was sophomore Pascual Felipe, who ended his race in 20th with a time of 18:14.61.

Tharptown had nine runners in the girls’ and boys’ 5k runs and the THS boys’ team finished in 10th place overall.
The top finisher of the three Lady Wildcat runners was eighth-grader Sophie Waldrep, who finished 24th with a time of 24:59.63. THS’ other two girl competitors were sophomore Yesenia Ramirez (113th; 32:06.69) and sophomore Wendy Funes (126th; 33:32.57).
The first to finish of six Tharptown boys’ team competitors was sophomore Emmanual Campos, who took 17th place with a time of 19:09.36. Seniors Edgar Perez (21:42.25) and Daniel Jimenez (21:46.15) finished 64th and 66th, respectively. Sophomore Joseph Osario (81st; 22:26.03), senior Giancarolos Espinoza (108th; 23:32.64), and freshman Santiago Cruz (150th; 26:18.22) rounded out the team.
Vina had two run in the girls’ Class 1A-4A 5k: Sophomores Kaylee Davis and Samantha Elders. Davis finished 135th with a time of 34:17.91 and Elders came in right behind her in 136th at 34:18.76.
Most of Vina’s competitors were seventh-to-ninth-graders who raced in the two-mile competition. Eighth-grader Lindie Easterling came in tops for Vina in that race at 32nd with a time of 15:57.58.
Belgreen senior Briseyda Luna finished 11th in the Class 1A-4A girls’ 5k race at the Pepsi XC Challenge in Moulton.
