Local varsity volleyball teams compete well heading into Labor Day weekend

The five local varsity volleyball teams continued play in the second week of the 2025 campaign. This roundup of results is for the week of August 25-30.

Belgreen started the week on Tuesday, August 26 with wins over Colbert County and Hackleburg. The Lady Bulldogs toppled the Lady Indians in two sets, 25-13 and 25-9, as senior Carson Hovater led the way with seven kills and senior Alayna Tate provided 16 assists. Against Hackleburg, BHS needed a third set to take the match (25-20, 19-25, 15-13). This time it was sophomore Randi Terry who led the attack for the Lady Bulldogs, recording 11 kills. Tate once again had 16 assists and senior Bryn Scott had a team-high 16 digs.

BHS continued play on Thursday with a match against Phillips, winning in three sets (26-24, 25-18, 25-21). Hovater and Terry combined for 20 kills in the contest, Scott had 20 digs, and Tate had another 16 assists.

The Lady Bulldogs wrapped the week up on Saturday at a West Morgan-hosted tournament.

BHS will pick play back up on Thursday, September 4 with its first area game against Covenant Christian.

Phil Campbell began its playing week on Tuesday on the road at Shoals Christian, coming up short against the Lady Flame. Then on Thursday, PCHS took on Haleyville. Despite playing “the best they have played all season,” according to head coach Lanice White, the Lady Bobcats came up just short again in three sets.

Up next for PCHS is Russellville and Deshler on Tuesday, September 2; then on Thursday the Lady Bobcats will play their area opener against Colbert Heights.

Red Bay opened the week with road matches at Tharptown against the Lady Wildcats and Phillips. The Lady Tigers, after suffering a 2-0 loss to THS, bounced back and defeated Phillips 2-0.

The Lady Tigers picked back up at home on Thursday, but took a 3-0 defeat against Class 4A Hamilton.

Russellville, after a very hot start to the season, cooled off at the end of this past week. The Lady Golden Tigers did open with wins over Deshler (25-22, 17-25, 15-9) and Lauderdale County (26-24, 17-25, 15-11) on Tuesday, though. That pushed RHS’ record to 11-1. Laila Hill had a combined 15 kills for those two matches to lead Russellville and Bri McCulloch had 27 digs.

The Lady Golden Tigers lost back-to-back games for the first time this campaign on Thursday, falling 2-0 to both Priceville and Guntersville at the 5A Classic in Moulton to drop them to 11-3 overall.

RHS will host Deshler and Phil Campbell for its next matches on Tuesday, September 2.

Tharptown picked up two wins out of three matches this past week. The Lady Wildcats grabbed victories over Red Bay and Phillips on Tuesday, beating the Lady Tigers 2-0 (25-8, 26-24) and the Lady Bears 2-0 (25-12, 25-10). That streak came to an end on Thursday when THS hosted Rogers and fell 3-1 (9-25, 25-16, 12-25, 24-26) to the Lady Pirates.

Tharptown’s next match will be its area opener at home against Covenant Christian on Tuesday, September 2.
