Vina girls place second, boys 10th at Class 1A Section 4 outdoor track & field championships

At the Class 1A Section 4 outdoor track & field championships, held April 24-25 in Winfield, the Vina High School varsity girls placed second out of 13 teams with 82 points while the boys’ team tied for 10th with 10 points.

In total, Vina collected six medals during the weekend meet with a gold, four silvers and one bronze finish.

Claiming the one gold medal for the Red Devils was sophomore Olivia Crum, who went to the top of the podium in the girls’ triple jump final with a mark of 30-8.

The second-place finishers for Vina included eighth-grader Lindie Easterling, sophomore Samantha Elders, Crum, and VHS’ girls’ 4×800-meter relay team. Easterling, who also grabbed a fifth-place finish in the girls’ 1600m run, grabbed the second spot in the 3200m run with a time of 14:13.6. Elders’ second-place finish came in the girls’ 100m hurdles as she completed the race in 19.97 seconds. And Crum, earning her second medal of the meet, placed second in the 300m hurdles with a time of 1:00.00. The Vina 4×800m relay team (consisting of Kinsley Newton, Samantha Elders, Kaylee Davis, and Bella Creekmore) had the second-best time of 15:56.63.

Vina’s lone bronze winner was junior Ryan Presley, who reached the podium in the boys’ javelin final with a mark of 130-2.

The Red Devils had six other top five finishes in final events; those six competitors were Easterling (1600m), sophomore Kinsley Newton (3200m), Kaylee Davis (100m hurdles), Elders (300m hurdles and high jump), freshman Addy Pannell (high jump), and Isaiah Beal (110m hurdles).

Several Vina student-athletes will now advance to compete at the Class 1A state championships. Those competitors include Elders and Pannell in the girls’ high jump, Cecilia Rowbottom in the girls’ discus, Easterling in the girls’ 1600m run, Elders and Davis in the girls’ 100m dash, and Crum in both the girls’ 300m hurdles and triple jump events.

The Class 1A state championships are set to be held in Cullman May 1-2.
