Belgreen, Tharptown athletes advance to state outdoor track & field meet after sectional performances
Varsity outdoor track & field teams from Belgreen High School, Red Bay High School, and Tharptown High School competed at the Class 2A Section 4 meet in Winfield April 24-25 with several student-athletes from Belgreen and Tharptown qualifying for the upcoming AHSAA Class 2A Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Cullman May 1-2.
Belgreen claimed four medals, Tharptown had three, and Red Bay had one top 10 finish at the section meet. In the final standings, Tharptown led the way among county schools; its boys’ team, with 20 points, finished seventh out of 10 teams, and the girls came in eighth with 31 points. Meanwhile, Belgreen’s boys tied for ninth with nine points and the Lady Bulldogs placed 10th with 30 points.
Two of Belgreen’s medals were earned by junior Lilliana Willingham who took bronzes in the girls’ long jump and triple jump finals. In the long jump Willingham recorded a distance of 13-4, and in the triple jump she placed third with a mark of 29-7.5. Senior Lucas Chambless had the other individual medal; he grabbed bronze in the boys’ long jump event with a 17-10.5 jump.
The BHS girls’ 4×100-meter relay team, made up by Makenna Fisher, Kirby Schucker, Isabella Tate and Audree West, also found the podium with a third-place finish. The team completed the relay with a time of 56.16 seconds.
The Bulldogs had one other athlete finish inside the top five in an event: senior Briseyda Luna. Competing in the girls’ 1600m final, Luna placed fifth with a time of 6:36.01.
Willingham, Chambless, Luna, and the girls’ 4×100m relay team—Fisher, Schucker, Tate and West—all qualified for the state meet in their respective events.

Tharptown’s Maddaline Amaro and Cody McCluskey were THS’ individual medal winners. Amaro, a freshman, earned a silver medal in the girls’ 100m, completing the race with a time of 13.81. McCluskey, a sophomore, also secured silver with a jump marked at 17-11 in the boys’ long jump final.
The Wildcats’ final top three finish came from the girls’ 4×100m relay team, which ran the final heat in a second-best time of 55.06.
Other notable finishes for THS included sophomore Carly Cason’s fifth-place time of 29.44 in the girls’ 200m dash, Amaro’s fourth place finish in the girls’ 400m race, McCluskey’s fifth-place finish in the boys’ 200m dash, and the THS boys’ 4×100m relay team’s fourth-place time of 50.35 in the finals.
Owing to their performances, Amaro, Cason, McCluskey, and the girls’ 4×100m relay team all qualified for the state championship meet in Cullman.

Red Bay had three competitors at the sectional. Senior Kyla Blackburn had the team’s best finish, a 10th place throw of 67-7 in the girls’ javelin final. Cutler Collins and Rowen Jennings ran in the boys 400m dash final, coming in 18th and 20th, respectively.
Phil Campbell, competing at the 3A level, also had one student-athlete, Aspen Misner, participate in its section meet in Winfield. Misner finished 10th in the girls’ javelin final with a throw of 74-5.
