Varsity volleyball roundup: September 22-27

Belgreen started the week with a home match against Colbert Heights, beating the Lady Wildcats in three sets. Carson Hovater had nine kills, Randi Terry recorded seven kills, and Lilliana Willingham had five kills and seven digs in the match.

Against Waterloo on Tuesday, September 23, the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Cougars 3-1 (25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 25-11). Willingham led the attack with 12 kills and also recorded 15 digs in the win. Meanwhile, Hovater had nine kills, Terry had eight kills, and Isabella Tate had six kills. Libero Bryn Scott had 29 digs, and setter Alayna Tate recorded 28 assists and 18 digs.

BHS ended the week with an exciting 3-2 (26-28, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) win on the road at rival Tharptown on Thursday, improving to 15-10 overall with the victory. Hovater led the attack with 15 kills and seven aces, Terry had 14 kills, and Willingham had 11 kills. Scott added another 26 digs to her tally, and Tate made 33 assists.

Belgreen’s next match will be an area contest at Mars Hill on Monday, September 29.

Phil Campbell played two matches on September 23, and was defeated in both. The Lady Bobcats faced Covenant Christian on the road at East Lawrence where they were defeated 2-0 (15-25, 9-25). PCHS also lost to East Lawrence 2-0 (3-25, 8-25).

Phil Campbell’s next varsity match will be played at Colbert County on Tuesday, September 30.

Red Bay lost both its area matches during the week. On Tuesday, the Lady Tigers, in their regular season home finale, fell to Lamar County 3-1. Then, on Thursday, RBHS lost on the road at Sulligent 3-1.

Russellville began its week with home matches against Lexington and area rival Lawrence County on Tuesday, September 23. The Lady Golden Tigers first earned another area win, beating the Lady Red Devils 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-20) to improve to 2-1 in area play. RHS then defeated Lexington 2-0 (25-9, 25-22) to move to 29-8 overall.

In the two matches combined, senior setter Fatima Ramirez led with 26 assists; hitters Laila Hill and Blevyn Sappington recorded 20 and 18 kills, respectively; sophomore Bri McCulloch added 29 digs; and Bella Malone and Adaleigh Smith both made three blocks each.

The Lady Golden Tigers wound up the week with a tournament at Class 4A Danville on Saturday where they went 1-4 on the day. RHS lost to Addison twice, lost to Cullman twice, and beat the hosts Danville.

Russellville’s next match is on Monday, September 29. The Lady Golden Tigers will host Covenant Christian and Colbert County at the RMS Gymnasium.

Tharptown faced Shoals Christian on Monday, September 22, beating the Flame 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-17). The Lady Wildcats then lost a tightly-contested match at home to rival Belgreen 3-2 (28-26, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15).

Tharptown’s next game will be at Sheffield on Monday, September 29; THS will face area foe Mars Hill on the road on September 30.
